Illustration of an anecdote during the battle of Jena : a young grenadier of the Guard steps forward during a review of the troops by the emperor and enthusiastically exclaims : "en avant!" (forward!). Napoleon is said to have answerd : "...he'd better wait to have led in thirty battles before thinking he can give me his advice..." After Horace Vernet's painting.
