Napoleon salutes his Guards in the courtyard of the Palace of Fontainebleau just before leaving for Elba: "Soldats de ma Vieille Garde, je vous fais mes adieux (...) Je voudrais vous presser tous sur mon cœur; que j'embrasse au moins votre drapeau." Depicted here, general Petit brings the flag to the Emperor. Much emotion is displayed on the faces of the guards, especially when compared to the lack of emotion of the four representatives of the Allied powers on the right. Based on Vernet's painting.
