Description:

From Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène: "During the march from Reichenbach to Gorlitz, Napoléon stopped in Makersdorf, and showed to the King of Naples the place where Duroc had fallen; he asked for the owner of the small farm where the Grand Marshal had died, and allocated him the sum of twenty thousand francs, of which four thousand were to be used for a monument in memory of Duroc, and sixteen thousand francs were for the masters of the house, husband and wife. The donation was executed during the evening, in the presence of the priest and the judge of Makersdorf, the money was counted in front of them, and they were put in charge of constructing the monument."
