Description:

Following Mack's capitulation in 1805 after the battle, Napoleon asks to see a procession of the Austrian prisoners. When they pass before him, he lifts his hat in salute of their courage. This oft-reproduced scene illustrates the beneficence and virtue of Napoleon who honours the valour and courage of all soldiers regardless of their nationality or cause. Respect for the enemy makes the man even greater. It also shows Napoleon's closeness to troops, whether they be French or enemy. Based on the painting by Debret.
