Description:
The incident is described in Chambure, p. 39. After 13 Vendémiaire, Napoleon while still General is placed in command of Paris, where there is a famine. Napoleon walks through the city's public places to make sure peace is kept and to take the pulse of the population. One day, the people are particularly angry and crowd around the General demanding bread. An old woman, particularly corpulent, says, pointing to the officers: "...as long as they eat, they don't mind if we starve." Napoleon replied: "which of us two is fatter?" Everyone laughed and applauded the General.
