Archdeacon Lucien on his death-bed designating with his arm the young Napoleon as the future head of the family.

Description:

Archdeacon Lucien on his deathbed, talking to Joseph, but designating Napoleon: "You are the eldest of the family, but always remember that here is the head." After Charles Bonaparte died in 1785, the Archdeacon became in a sense the family patriarch until his death in 1791. Here Napoleon's mother and siblings are shown huddled around the Archdeacon's deathbed, in a state of great emotional turmoil; only the young Napoleon (22 at the time) seems to be above all of this.
