Description:

The wife of Armand Polignac, left, begs on her knees that the life of her husband be spared. Napoleon grants her wish, although Polignac was part of the Cadoudal conspiracy. Napoleon is here dressed as First Consul although the event took place 10 June 1804. Propaganda scene meant to showcase Napoleon's humanity and generosity of spirit. Josephine was very much against the firmness with which Napoleon and Fouché dealt with conspirators.
