Description:

Napoleon imprisoned after Thermidor and the fall of Robespierre in 1794. Here he is seen in prison, studying a map of Italy. He had been promoted brigadier by Robespierre's brother after Toulon, where he had distinguished himself by his zeal. This very romantic scene, in the semi-darkness, is meant to illustrate the young Bonaparte's strength of conviction, solitary genius, and in some way, confidence in the future.
