The Ball at the Austrian Ambassador.

Bal chez l'Ambassadeur d'Autriche

Description:

Schwartzenberg, the Austrian Ambassador had thrown a ball to celebrate the marriage of Napoleon and Marie Louise. A fire broke out, claiming the lives of many, including the sister-in-law of the Ambassador. A similar fire had plagued a ball on the occasion of the mariage of Louis XVI to Marie-Antoinette, sparking superstitious fear in the hearts of many, including Napoleon. Napoleon often saw Josephine as his good-luck charm; this incident reinforcing that belief. Here he is shown supporting a fainting woman, perhaps his young wife, out of the burning building.
