Composed Title English:
Napoleon wounded at Ratisbon.
Inscribed Title:
Napoleon vor Regensburg.
Description:
Despite the immense courage he displayed in battle, often leading his troops from the front, Napoleon was only ever wounded once, here at Ratisbon. During the action, the emperor was hit in the heel. The surgeon Yvan intervened, the wound made worse by the fact Napoleon had not removed his boots for three days. Nonetheless, he mounted his horse before the wound was entirely bandaged, ready to finish the battle. He is presented here as a modern Achilles, one who however does not succumb to his wound. Once again he is depicted as invulnerable, protected by the gods0
