Description:

The Princess of Hatzfeld visits Napoleon in Potsdam to beg for mercy for her husband who has been found guilty of espionage. Napoleon shows her the letter that is proof of the prince's crime. He then throws it into the fire and declares there is no longer any proof against him, he is free to go. This incident was often reproduced in prints to show Napoleon was capable of clemency.
