Napoleon's hat and sword rest on the tomb. At the left a small cluster of General Bertrand and family, with Gal Montholon standing, covering his face with his hand. In clouds, dead marshals from left to right: Lannes, Berthier, Brune, and Selim III of Egypt kneeling in front of Desaix who is sitting. Behind them, Poniatowski & Bessières. Around them, bards sing to the glory of the emperor. Also Kleber, Ney, Duroc, Hoche, and others. Behind them thousands of marching soldiers. In the foreground, the remains of a shipwreck, a plank inscribed: RIVOLI PYRAMIDE MARENGO AUSTERLITZ JENA WAGRAM MOSCOWA MONMIRAIL LIGNY WAT -- that is where the ship broke.
