Bonaparte at Jaffa.
Inscribed Title:
BONAPARTE A JAFFA.
Inscription:
Gros pinx // Lefevre sc. // [Publié par Furne à Paris]
Description:
Napoleon, with ungloved hand, touches the buboe of a plague victim in the army in Jaffa, Egypt, oblivious to the risks to his own health, Christ-like, suggesting quasi-divine powers. His fearlessness is contrasted by the attitudes of his officers behind him. Desgenettes attempts to stop him. Bessières covers his nose and mouth. This gesture is also reminiscent of the one by the French kings, thus legitimising Napoleon's rule.
