Description:

This episode is from one of Napoleon's earliest military campaigns. The young artillery captain Bonaparte confidently points to a map on the ground with his sword, while pointing with his left hand to a fort in the distance, which he argues should be the key to their attack. The officers listen attentively. In the left background, troops man a cannon. General Dugommier follows Napoleon's plan, although he is merely a captain, which is to take two forts, thus rendering it impossible for the British to hold their position. His tactic was adopted, the attack took place on 17 December. The following day, the British folded. On the 22nd Napoleon was named brigadier general. This marked the beginning of his meteoric rise.
