Description:

Napoleon bending over the dying Lannes. A romanticised version in which Napoleon comforts his wounded general Lannes. The Battle of Essling was marked by the death of the very courageous general Lannes who served Napoleon since the 1790s. Though his dedication to the army and the Emperor, the carnage and destruction of so many years overcame his dedication and he expressed his disgust and disillusionment [in a letter to his wife during Peninsular Wars]. Lannes was shot in the leg at Essling, his agony lasted six days, during which he called and - allegedly - cursed the Emperor who arrived on 31 May. Napoleon's hat has fallen, two heads close together, as equals, Nap holds his hand. General sorrow.
