del. BOURDET
FAUCHERY, Jean Claude Auguste (1798-1843)
Composed Title English:
The Coronation.
Inscription:
Bourdet, del. // Fauchery, dir. // Lafond, Sculp.
Description:
Napoleon is about to place a crown on Josephine's head, as the Pope Pius VII seated to the right and other members of the court look on. In a single action David has represented the coronation of both Josephine and Napoleon, while the pope is relegated tothe background. Detail adapted from David's Coronation of Napoleon I. Here the Pope looks older, weaker, more sidelined, while Lebrun has been brought to the other side, holding the sceptre, thus placing the eagle very close to the cross.
