Description:

A print after the sculpture by Canova. The nude Napoleon stands, with a fig leaf, and a cloak over his left shoulder. In his left hand he holds a spear. In his right, he holds an orb on which stands a winged Victory, who has a laurel wreath in one hand and a stick in the other. His drapery is held together by a broach with an eagle. His sword and breastplate rest against the tree stump by his right leg. In the original, the Victory does not hold anything. Napoleon did not like this statue, perhaps he felt there was a look of indecisiveness about it, despite its clear heroic classical tradition. He probably also disapproved of the explicit nudity. Nevertheless, Canova was much feted by the Emperor.
