Bond Sculpsit // Engraved for La Belle Assemblée New Series, Published by John Bell, Southampton St. Strand.
Description:
Portrait bust of Josephine, in a frame topped by clouds and a fallen crown. Below, a cupid among flowers gazes at a bubble, referring to the brevity and transience of life. These probably represent the Empress's changing fortunes. The flowers around the cupid are mostly roses, for which Josephine was famous. The portrait of Josephine is based on the one by Robert Lefèvre. She wears diadem, high lace collar, low décolletage, and looks out at the viewer.
