Composed Title English:
Bonaparte.
Inscribed Title:
BUONAPARTE
Description:
Full-length portrait of Napoleon wearing his General's uniform, and a long sword, plumed hat in hand. He is writing on a piece of paper which rests on his hat. Troops cross a bridge in the right background. The 1796 Hilaire Le Dru which provided the initial inspiration for this print must have been very popular, given the vast number of prints that were copied from it. The backgrounds in this print and 8° N I 006 are slightly different: both are rocky, but one has a bridge with crossing troops. When Napoleon became Consul, Coqueret altered the plate to make Napoleon's hair shorter and his features leaner.
