Théophile Bonet (1620-1689) was a Swiss physician and scholar who wrote extensively on pathology and anatomy. He collated the observations made in 3,000 autopsies and wrote the influential work, "Sepulchretum" (1679).
Bonet is shown in this image in a scholarly setting, surrounded by medical books, with the skeletal figure of Death at the door. Bonet is writing in a book with one hand, and holds an hourglass in the other.
