Dr. Joseph Black (1728-1799) was a British physician and chemist, who was professor of Medicine at the University of Glasgow (where he also served as lecturer in Chemistry). He is best known for the rediscovery of “fixed air” (carbon dioxide), the concept of latent heat, and the discovery of the bicarbonates.
