Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793) was a French astronomer noted for his computation of an orbit for Halley’s Comet and for his studies of the satellites of Jupiter. He was also a statesman involved in the French Revolution, acting for a time as mayor of Paris - he was guillotined in 1793.
