In the eighteenth century, while card games, and whist in particular, developed into a fashionable aristocratic pastime, moralists warned gaming could lead to quarreling and even murder. In France, royal figures were removed from many sets of playing cards following the 1848 Revolution and replaced with bourgeois men and women in poses reminiscent of fashion plates.
