Neuro Annual Reports: 1928-1984

Starting from his first year as Surgeon in Charge of Neurological Surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH), Penfield was required to prepare an annual report outlining the operating and research achievements of his Neurological Sub-Department of the hospital's larger Surgical Department. These sub-department reports, originally only consisting of one or two pages, were included as part of the RVH's annual reports. With the opening of the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) in 1934, the MNI began producing its own annual reports, offering detailed descriptions of its surgical and research activities. Increasing in length every year, these detailed accounts of the activities of the institute's staff continued to be published up until 1984, after which the annual report's format changed to that of a briefer information booklet.
