Scenes

Medical scenes reflect various ways in which the world of medicine was conceived; many of these images consider the relationship between physician and patient, rather than the doctor as an individual. Much historical medical imagery is dominated by men, particularly portraiture, since women were typically excluded from the profession. When women do appear, as in several of the scenes here, it is usually in the role of patients dependent on male doctors. These images invite us to consider the issue of gender in medical imagery and in the societies that produced them.
