Light therapeutics; a practical manual of phototherapy for the student and the practitioner : with special reference to the incandescent electric-light bath / John Harvey Kellogg. Battle Creek, Mich. : Good Health Pub. Co., 1910. 1st ed. WBC K33L 1910 Osler - Robertson.
This photograph depicts a patient, constricted by white cloth and wearing goggles, receiving phototherapeutic treatment to his chest. While the patient in this image from the first edition of Dr. Kellogg's light therapy manual looks uncomfortable and constrained, the second edition features the use of a model, clad in Art Deco attire and frilly undergarments. This image of restraint contrasts greatly with the artifice and sensuality of the second. Paired together, the effect is one of constraint, indifference, and discomfort in opposition to freedom, enjoyment, and pleasure.
