A system of physiologic therapeutics / Solomon Solis-Cohen, ed. Philadelphia : Blakiston, 1901-05. (p.229) WBJ S687s 1901 Osler - Robertson.
This photograph depicts Finsen's machine for delivering targeted phototherapy. A compressor is used on the cheek of the patient in the left foreground, as Finsen had discovered that compressing the skin and tissue to remove blood from an area facilitated light treatment. A nurse holds the patient's head still so that the long tube of the machine can point directly at the compressed area, and both patient and nurse wear protective goggles to shield their eyes from the damaging UV rays.
