This photograph from a light therapeutics practitioner's manual depicts a patient blind-folded (perhaps in lieu of protective goggles), arms grasping his chair, shirtless and motionless in front of an electric light machine that resembles a large gun more than a lamp. As opposed to before and after photographs depicting ostensibly real patients, this photograph uses an anonymous subject to show a particular light machine. In similar cases, models or stand-ins who are clearly not patients turn up to demonstrate techniques for using phototherapeutic equipment. This photograph also provides a striking contrast to images depicting the joy and pleasure that was supposed to accompany heliotherapy.
