| The presentation inscription reads: "Herrn Direktor Koetschau in Dankbarkeit, H. Hell. 18/1 1935". From 1933 to 1936 Koetschau was the director of the Picture Gallery (Gemäldegalerie) at the State Museums (Staatliche Museen) in Berlin. This study of Rembrandt's late drawings was the author's inaugural dissertation at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University, Berlin. His gratitude indicates that Max Stern was not the only student to profit from Koetschau's help.
