Description
Frederick the Wise (1463-1525) was the Elector of Saxony and the patron of Lucas Cranach. The author's signed presentation is to "Professor Dr. K. Koetschau" and dated Dresden 1903. Koetschau was the Director of the Historical Museum in Dresden and the Royal Military Gallery at that time (1902-1907). The binder's label: Richard Oesterreich, Dresden, documents that he had the book bound in that city. It also contains his bookplate by E. Liebermann; a ms. label on the spine: 213; the ms. inscription: Dr. Max Stern, VIII 16; and endpapers stamped: Dominion Gallery. VIII was Stern's library classification number for the subject of patrons and patronage.
