| The painting Artist with friends by Emily Carr, illustrated facing p. 356, is reproduced courtesy of the Dominion Gallery. After Stern met Carr in Victoria in 1944 and chose 60 paintings for exhibition to go to the Gallery on consignment, he went back east on the train reading two of her other books, the award-winning Klee Wyck and The Book of Small (also autobiographical). Growing Pains was published posthumously.
