The inscriptions probably refer to works in the Max Stern collection: ms. inscription on the front flyleaf: "Repose 1910"; on the title page: "Repose 1910, Melancholy 1931 (head)", and corresponding plate numbers for these works; ms. annotation to plate 145 (Woman combing her hair): "Similar to Stern but hair different".
