| Max Stern's doctoral dissertation (University of Bonn, 1928) on the life and work of the German painter Johann Peter von Langer (1756-1824) was published in 1930. There are two different copies of it in Max Stern's library, printed from identical type but with several variations. They have different covers and in one the leaves of illustrations are all bound at the end while in other they are interspersed in the text. Most importantly, they differ in their title pages: with the title and series statements laid out on one page, one copy names the author, Dr. Max Stern, and the other does not.
