Description
After his first unsuccessful attempt at a dissertation topic, Max Stern returned to Prof. Koetschau, who then proposed the German academic painter Johann Peter von Langer (1756-1824). Stern used this history of the State Academy of Art in Düsseldorf (Staatliche Kunstakademie), written by his professor Richard Klapheck, for his research. Stern underlined references to Langer; margin annotations are also in his handwriting. Carbon copies of two typewritten letters by Stern, both dated 29 October 1925 were found in the book: the first is to the General Landesarchiv, Karlsruhe, with an inquiry regarding the Kurfürstliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf for the period of 1780-1810, and the second to "Verlag des Allgemeinen Lexikons der Bildenden Künstler, E.A. Seemann, Leipzig," inquiring about material on Johann Peter von Langer.
