| When he was considering the Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900) as a subject for his dissertation, Max Stern visited Budapest to look at his works. This 1924 guide to the Budapest Fine Arts Museum (Szépmuvészeti múzeum) still contains the entrance ticket stub Max placed between its pages. At the museum he found out that Gabriel de Térey, the author of this catalogue and one of Hungary's leading art historians, was just completing a comprehensive study of Munkácsy. In his memoirs, Stern recalls feeling rather sheepish, going back to his hotel and ordering a fine meal and a bottle of wine, and returning to Vienna with the first hangover of his life.
