| When he was looking for a dissertation topic, Max Stern's professor and mentor Karl Koetschau initially suggested the Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900). He may have acquired this monograph on the artist in 1925, when he was preparing to start research on his dissertation. It bears ms. inscriptions in Stern's handwriting in pencil on the endpapers and several ms. annotations to the illustrations.
