Description
The illustrations in this luxury edition are full-page reproductions of Dürer's woodcuts of Christ's Passion, originally part of: Passio domini nostri Jesu: ex Hieronymo Paduano, Dominico Mancino, Sedulio et Baptista Mantuano per fratrem Chelidonium collecta, cum figuris Alberti Dureri Novici Pictoris. Nuremberg: Hieronymus Holzel, 1511. It is also published under title of Die grosse Passion. Stern's book has his library classification code I 103 inscribed, and the Dominion Gallery stamp. The exhibited page shows the scene known in the Christian story of salvation as the Harrowing of Hell. After the Crucifixion and before the Resurrection, Christ descended to hell, and, much to the dismay of the devils, broke down the gates. He reached down into the abyss and redeemed those who had died too early to receive salvation, such as Abraham and other righteous Old Testament figures.
