Description |
|
The ms. inscription on the slipcase reads: "Dr. Max Stern privat". A charming thank-you note and dedication to Stern written and signed by Paul Clemen on a card dated 10 November 1936 is laid in (see the transcription and translation). The slipcase is stamped: Dominion Gallery; there is a ms. inscription on the flyleaf: Dr. Stern, VIII 27, and a ms. label on the spine: VIII 27. In Stern's library classification scheme, VIII was for iconography and other subjects. The gift of this ode to silence, a personal confession by his former professor and dissertation advisor in a limited edition intended only for his friends, attests to the close relationship between the two men. Clemen had already been a friend of Max's father. A year later, he was to make the contact to the art historian Tancred Borenius, who was Stern's guarantor in London.
