Palmer Howard, Osler's teacher and colleague at McGill Medical School, spent the summer of 1884 in Germany as a break from what Osler called "the excessive drudgery of teaching" (quoted in Harvey Cushing, "The Life of Sir William Osler" (1925), vol. 1, p.210).
