Description: William Willoughby Francis, William Osler's "nephew" (really a cousin), laying out to dry several old documents that had been found in a safe at the Master's rooms of the almshouse at Ewelme. Osler was Master of the almshouse by virtue of being Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University. In the summer of 1906 Osler and some companions decided to try and open an old safe which stood in the Master's Rooms and which had not been opened within anyone's memory. It was finally opened with the help of a tradesman from London, and yielded a collection of documents ranging in date from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. They were quite damp, which explains Francis' activities in this photograph. After Osler's death, Francis became the first Osler Librarian. This photograph is reproduced on page 58 of volume two of Cushing's "The Life of Sir William Osler".
