Description: Sir William Osler at the ruins of Reading Abbey, attending the unveiling of memorial tablets for the first and last abbotts of this historical abbey, which was destroyed during the reign of Henry VIII. A Reading physician, Dr. Jamieson B. Hurry, prompted by Osler's opinion that every medical man should have a hobby, had sent to Osler a book he had written on the history of the abbey. This resulted in Osler's visit to Reading, where he actually unveiled the tablets and delivered an address. Osler is seen in the centre of the group, along with the mayor, and what may be members of the city council, or a local order (note the distinctive hats and fur coats).
