Description: William Osler at the almshouse at Ewelme, a small village fourteen miles outside of Oxford. Since the early 17th century, the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University has also served as the Master of this almshouse, which was founded by a granddaughter of Geoffrey Chaucer. Previous professors had not spent much time on their duties as Masters of the almshouse, but Osler took a great interest in his new responsibility and occasionally spent days at a time in the Master's rooms. The Osler family were also known to attend church in Ewelme.
