The date and location of the photograph are unknown; however, the painting of the portrait is mentioned in Cushing's "The Life of Sir William Osler", in a letter of December 1908, written by Osler to an acquaintance. Thomas was a well-known American painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Notes: The following is an extract from a letter written by Mr. Seymour Thomas, the artist, on this portrait, to Mr. George F. Clifton, in Los Angeles: "The portrait of Doctor Osler was painted in Paris January 1909, and as Doctor Osler was a great friend of my friend, Dr. Hugh Young of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, he posed for me that I might have this portrait and thus always have a good doctor with me." In Cushing's "Life of Osler", there is mention of the painting of this portrait, December 1908. (transcribed from note)
