William Osler had just taken the position of physician-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and, after a visit to Toronto, travelled to Tracadie, New Brunswick in the company of his "nephew", Francis, to inspect a leper colony there. Mrs. Gross, recently widowed, was vacationing near there with Sarah Woolley, and the four met up in Saint John, New Brunswick. Osler and Gross married three years later.
