Description: William Osler at work on his landmark medical textbook, "The Principles and Practice of Medicine", at Johns Hopkins Hospital. This highly respected textbook, which was the last to cover all aspects of medicine, was first published in 1892 and continued to be published long after his death in 1919. It was eventually translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese. There is a note made by Osler on the back of this photograph containing what Francis calls "the most extraordinary characteristic" of Osler's handwriting: the "enormous k."
Notes: This is not the one used by Cushing in the Life, 1925. This pencil endorsement is in Osler's hand, & shows its most extraordinary characteristic the enormous k in Book, often resembling double ll!! W. Osler Writing a Text Book JHH July 1891.
