Francis, who was actually Osler's first cousin once removed, would become the first Osler librarian after Osler's death in 1919. In this picture he was 13 years old.
Notes: Osler, W.W. Francis at 13, Thayer, H.A. Lafleur. From Dr. Cushing, 1932. Taken in H.A. Lafleur's room at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Aug (?) 1891, just before Lafleur's return to Montreal. Note his cat and his battered top hat on the table. O. had decided that the hat was not respectable enough for Montreal, so he and I had played football with it. W.W. Francis 1939. The cat was a dysenteric nuisance, but certified non-amoebic. Recognizable photos on the mantlepiece: R.L. Macdonell (?) (profile to R. of lampshade) Palmer Howard (near centre, 2nd to R. of R.L.M) Geo. Ross (2nd from Stein). Dr. Lawrence S. Kubie, ... '21, of N.Y.C. has (?) the original plate, and ......... prints of it about 1936, [one of which is given to Lafleur Reporting Soc., 1945. W.W.F.] (transcribed from back of photo)
