Description: William Osler (seated at centre) with doctors, nurses and patients at the University of Pennsylvania Orthopedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases. The Hospital opened a new building in April of 1887 and Osler quickly secured an appointment, thanks to Dr. Weir Mitchell, who was an attendant there. This photograph was taken in the summer of 1887. This photograph is reproduced in Harvey Cushing's "The Life of Sir William Osler" (1925), vol. 1, p. 286.

Fourth from the left is Dr. J.K. Mitchell, a colleague of Osler's at the Hospital. Next to Mitchell is Dr. G. E. de Schweinitz, another colleague and the author of "Diseases of the Eye: A Handbook of Ophthalmic Practice for Students and Practitioners", an influential work that went through ten editions from 1892 to 1924.
