DEATHS.
We announce with extreme concern the loss of DUNCAN McGILLIVRAY, Esq. one of the principal partner of the North West Company; whose death on Saturday last, the 9th instant, terminated a long and painful illness; which he sustained with uncommon fortitude and resignation. The loss of this young gentleman has caused a vacuity in the Society of this place, which cannot be easily filled, and is a source of unfeigned regret to all who knew him. To a vigorous and energetic mind, and the keenest sensibility of honour, he added a reserved and modest deportment; which at once commanded respect, and conciliated esteem and affection. In all the relations of life he performed with scrupulous exactness, the duties of son, brother, friend and citizen. We would carefully avoid a panegyric on a man so well known and so much respected; but we conceive that there is a moral obligation on us to present for imitation, a character who holding a distinguished rank in society, leaves nothing on which the tooth of malevolence can prey. His remains were interred in the family vault on Monday last. On Tuesday morning, the twelfth instant, Mr. BENJAMIN TEPPER (a native of Dantzic) furrier of this city, who by his last will, has bequeathed £15. towards finishing and completing the Protestant Episcopal church erected in Montreal, with £10. more to the poor of the said church, and the residue of his estate (after payment of his debts and another small legacy) to his majesty the king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, towards the support of the present war against the enemies of his country, his crown, and dignity. Very suddenly, at his residence in St. John’s, New Brunswick, the hon. GABRIEL G. LUDLOW, Esq. president and commander in chief of that province, in the 72d years of his age, universally regretted. In England, lord Trafalgar, Æt. 20; nephew of the late lord Nelson, and only made issue of the present peer: it is probable the title and estates will descend to the eldest son of Mr. Bolton, who married a sister of the deceased hero.—Also in England, lords ELCHO and PENRYN.
