Abstract

A copy of manuscript 2370a, this undated document by John MacDonell presents an interesting portrait of the geography, flora, fauna and history of the Red River region. The author describes Lake Winnipeg, the Rivière aux Morts, the Sault à la Biche, as well as the Assiniboine, Souris and Qu'Appelle rivers. Noting the increasing presence of the Hudson's Bay Company in the area, MacDonell briefly discusses the history of old French forts in the area and the several local trading posts belonging to the North West Company. He also comments on the cultures of the Ojibway, Cree, Assiniboine, Mandan and Gros Ventres (Hidatsa) peoples.

Notant l'influence grandissante de la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson dans la région, MacDonell décrit brièvement l'historique de vieux forts français localisés dans la région et de postes locaux appartenant à la Compagnie du Nord Ouest. Enfin, il résume les modes de vie des Ojibways, Cris, Assiniboines, Mandans et Gros Ventres (Hidatsa).
