On the great man's arrival a fresh endeavou[r] was made, and the imprisoned gentlemen again deman[d]ed to be sent off to Montreal. On the 3d of August, M[r] Shaw was admitted to an interview with the Governor who, upon being upbraided for his breach of promise, replied that he was indifferent what might be thought of his conduct, that as Governor in Chief of Rupert's Land and acting upon the charter of the Hudson's Bay Company, he was authorized to treat all strangers and intruders on their territory as he thought fit; that he shoul[d] require Mr Shaw to enter into recognizance to keep the peace, and Mr MacTavish with Mr Shaw as his security to enter in a recognizance to appear in a Court of Justice to answer to some charge, which was not specifie[d] and on these conditions he would send those two gentlemen to Moose Factory to be thence conveyed to Canada but that otherwise they should be detained at York Factory all the winter.
